Shipping Instructions for Packages to Russia
1. Never, Never insure packages. This almost always guarantees that the package will be opened by customs and possibly pilfered. It can also cause very hefty customs charges on this end.
2. Be sure to value the contents, together with the cost of shipping, DOES NOT EXCEED $100. You will more than likely have to complete the customs form for sending the package, and you may be asked to give an estimated value to the contents of the box. Remember to estimate low, meaning: think garage sale prices. If you're sending things like home videos of TV shows, these are of no retail value. Even new items should be taken out of excess packaging and then valued as used items. You can even wash items such as clothing, take the tags off, etc. giving items the appearance that they are not going to be sold for profit here is really what you want to prove. Please package items, that would make a mess if broken/spilled/opened in ziplock bags, if possible.
3. Use vague terminology when filling out customs forms. Use terms like household goods, used videos, personal items rather than listing items specifically and individually. This, too, raises suspicion in customs and many times causes the package to be opened. If items are used, say so.
4. Send small packages or boxes. It is better, and many times more cost effective on your end, to send 2 smaller boxes rather than one large box. If items are small enough, use a padded envelope instead of a box. Large boxes tend to attract customs fees, and are calculated by weight.
5. Use Air Mail when possible. Of course, it's not the most cost effective way of shipping, but it is definitely the most reliable way of receiving things here. Surface rates are much cheaper, but take up to 3 months to arrive, and many times end up getting lost en route. There are two ( I believe) different air mail rates. The cheaper of the two, economy, arrives in approximately 4-6 weeks. This is what we find to be the best and most effective method of shipping. I believe the other arrives in 6-10 days.
